Chapter Thirty

Stan left Marty’s and climbed back into her car, checking her clock. She wasn’t supposed to meet the crew at her shop until two. Amara had appointments at the clinic until then, and Char had a special lunch she was cooking for some of her guests. So Stan had some time to kill.

And she had a few ideas on how to do it, all of which directly contradicted Jessie’s instructions to not conduct her own investigation. But she’d gotten really curious about this stripper business. Maybe there was something odd going on over there. And maybe they were scrambling to make sure the police didn’t know about it. On the other hand, if a potential customer came in and poked around—

On impulse, she pulled out her phone and called her sister. “Free?” she asked.

Caitlyn hesitated. “Depends. I’m coming to help you clean the shop in a bit.”

“I know. But are you free now?”

“Why?”

“Because I have an errand to run. One that has to do with Perry Puck.”

“Pick me up,” Caitlyn said, her tone changing. “I’ll be ready.”

* * *

“Where the heck is this place?” Caitlyn held the phone, watching the GPS as Stan tried to keep up with the turns the robotic voice barked at her, as well as Caitlyn’s commentary. “This shouldn’t be this hard.”

“Maybe they don’t want anyone to know where they are.” Stan paused, thankful for a red light, and took in her surroundings. They were still in Frog Ledge, according to the GPS, but way over on the western side, heading north. Or so her phone told her. Personally, she couldn’t figure out the north/south/east/west thing if there was a gun pointed at her head. But this place was kind of in the middle of nowhere. Stan didn’t get out this way much.

The towns around Frog Ledge were a study in contrasts. There was the college town on the eastern border, with an “urban area” of about four miles that didn’t have the best reputation. Then there was the elite, wealthy town on the west side full of giant homes and upscale boutiques. Frog Ledge was the agricultural center that was gaining its own reputation as an up-and-comer, with its combination of rural farmland and evolving downtown. She didn’t know much about this northeast border town, but given the size of the houses over here, they seemed on the more expensive end of the spectrum. It suggested to Stan that this outfit had its foot in both types of communities. She could easily see Perry Puck performing for socialites. Which brought an image of their mother to mind, making her cringe.

“Stan?” Caitlyn pointed out the windshield. “Green light.”

“Where am I going? You’re the navigator.”

“Right. Sorry.” Caitlyn picked up her phone again. “Turn left.”

Stan made the turn. The guy behind her made a nasty hand gesture at her apparent confusion. She blew him a kiss, enjoying his puzzled look. “Then what? We’re kind of in the middle of nowhere.”

“I know. Oh wait.” Caitlyn pointed. “That must be it.
